Artist Statement

My work is about capturing a feeling of natural stillness and tranquility.

My process is the transmutation of paint into lyrical expressions of color and mood.

The Great Mystery of the natural world begins to reveal itself when one is quiet. Simple shapes and forms of sky, ground, and horizon are balms capable of soothing my restless soul.

Jamie Kirkland

Artists with contemplative goals proceed very differently from theorists. Abstracting and simplifying landscape precipitates my immersion in this meditative process of repetition and subtle variation often resulting in a loss of linear time.

I have always been moved by Iris Murdoch's description of the artistic process when she said "Artists dream of a silence which they must enter as some creatures return to the sea to spawn."

I aspire to convey to the viewer the transcendent pleasure I derive from the experience of painting.
